Starting January 1, 2008, the state of California has adopted legislation that will make it mandatory that all pool pump motors used for circulation of swimming pools and/or spas that are 1 HP or over must be able to operate in a minimum of two speeds. If you look at the energy consumption of a regular single speed pool motor, it consumes three times the electricity of a new refrigerator. While this legislation is not requiring every homeowner to replace their pool pumps, it will cause homeowners to upgrade their pumps when their existing motors wear out.
In order to comply with the new legislation, many pool equipment manufacturers have come out with new pumps that are variable speed, programmable, and much more efficient than the last generation of pool pumps.
